Developing new intellectual property can be nerve-racking because of the financial investment; Naughty Dog has had a series of layoffs over the past two years and underwent a restructuring that Druckmann said would ensure the company could operate as "an I.P. powerhouse."

"It is about striking a balance of business and art," he said. "It is not just jumping on any opportunity to increase our bottom line."

It's a shame because the graphics and concept are good, but they really went out of their way to make the player character ugly. First thing you see is her shaving her bald head. I'm just surprised she doesn't have a peg leg too.

It's a very purposeful choice Western devs make now. A lot of the Sony teams seem to think making their female MC 'ugly' = real person, not an 'unrealistic' fantasy woman for icky men to salivate over. Even though it's based on a real person, Tati Gabrielle. What happened to having a mix, like actual real life?

You would have thought they would have learnt from Concord and their purposefully hideous character designs.

It's funny, male characters in Western games are never given the same treatment. Only females. Who on those teams hates attractive women so much that they make them so vaguely masculine?

Even her shaving her head is supposed to signal to Resetera types who can get excited, oh don't worry our main character won't be trying to be attractive at any time.

Between this and the GoT sequel, those devs have purposefully uglified both characters. As everyone knows women in Western games want to look ugly. Just like real life where they all leave the house with no makeup or nice clothes on.

Clever casting by ND though they get a two for one as the actress is half black and half Asian.

That’s something. She was in the Uncharted movie as a character with short sisqo-esque hair and meant to be “imposing” despite a feminine appearance. Maybe that motivated Neil to hire and give her broad shoulders.

The trailer seemed quite stereotypical to me. Of course the woman gets forced into a marriage, of course it is Ciri who is so progressive as to question "traditions" and the patriarchy. Use of the male gaze in the beginning, later Ciri goes into the cave unprepared to be smacked around, for why?

To me the trailer was a bit too much on the nose. I hope the game has some actual critical storytelling in the final product.

Ending on a positive note, that choir soundtrack still sends shivers down my spine.

Thinking about this, it'd be more inventive and interesting to make a game based around what some people in 1986 would have thought human culture of space travel would look like. 

The TV and CD player and so on in the trailer just look out of place, it's like everything about 1986 advanced centuries except the consumer electronics. The fashions are somewhat similar. It just feels odd if you think about it any yet it's clearly supposed to be some deeply constructed aspect of the universe. It's just superficial nostalgia but they somehow decided it's narrative relevant. What do you bet there's Soviets and stuff? Even though the world necessary for space travel like depicted would be dramatically changed beyond recognition.

edit: Not saying there's not ways to do it or that they haven't. Or to overly judge off a shitty trailer. But it's like drawing all the attention to the weakest part of your fiction by framing it this way.

It kind of is just a glorified mod. Even in their their official statement they mention that they aren't even treading on existing canon, so this is just its own little vacuum story existing outside of Elden Ring. Reminds me of those games that Capcom keeps tacking on for free to all the recent RE titles, like REVerse etc.
I don't REALLY mind the idea of it, it's definitely not for me. The only thing I really worry about is that this might change what the expectations are for a souls game going forward from From, I could see with this being a bit more handhold-y sounding that it could attract new players to From's games, but those types of players might develop expectations for a From game that don't align with what I'm looking for in one. It's no big deal, because at the end of the day it's just what I choose to waste my time doing, but I don't wanna see From compromising their design philosophy because of pressure from Bandai-Namco to chase the ever fruitful "broader demographic".

Boobs are attractive on women; they are not attractive on men. Huge, square shoulders are attractive on men; they're not attractive on women. This extends beyond just physical traits, as it's true for personality traits as well. Men like Han Solo can act like dicks and still have charisma, which both men and women like. That's a lot harder for women. OTOH, women can act soft even while being assertive, which again is endearing to both men and women; for a man, acting soft often comes off as weak and limp-dicked.

I know it's fashionable to pretend all differences are cultural (which is obviously not true), but even if they are, that's still a description of our current reality. Men and women are different, and women acting like dicks just does not get as much endearment as when it's a charismatic man, and likewise, a soft man doesn't get as much love as a soft woman. People can complain about reality all they want, but that is reality.

Agreed, but I think that is an added layer rather than the fundamental issue. The fundamental issue is people by and large treat and respond to men and women differently, across the board, in behavior after behavior. No one bats an eye at a girl doing a kissy-lips photo, but a dude will get made fun of for it unless you're doing it ironically like Zoolander. I could go on and on with examples from both sexes. The population at large sees a difference, full stop.
