I find Schumer's statement particularly reprehensible where it takes him almost the whole statement to describe the actions of the DHS to curtail free speech.

Any democrat who refuses to act in situations like this, or qualifies their actions with bullshit rhetoric like Schumer is doing, need to be primaried, dragged out of office and be publicly shamed for the rest of their lives.

I just don't get what all the qualifiers are for.

Why do we have to couch defending the most basic of constitutional rights with bullshit racism that simultaneously buys into Trump's argument against first amendment rights? He's a legal permanent resident who has been illegally detained without even the faintest hint of reasonable cause, full stop, no qualifiers or extra context needed. That's all anyone should have to hear to be up in arms.

14 is depressingly low number for such a flagrant, clear cut violation of his rights. Khalil's arrest and attempted disappearing feels like a clear inflection point, an experiment by Trump's DHS. It's about as naked of a fascist move as one could design, with an obvious path to escalation and quotes acknowledging (direct link) the lack of legal merit to their arrest. Democrats that ignore this completely renege their moral standing and ability to credibly defend the rule of law.

The gotta-hear-both-sides framing is worth your scorn. It gives away the bigotry beneath; the feeling that Khalil is inherently guilty as a Palestinian or Arab American.

I haven't read anything about this guys case, and you all know my free speech maximalist stance, but I'm skeptical this guys "basic constitutional rights" are being violated. If he's a Visa overstay (most likely thing) then being detained for deportation and not having any legal representation is normal. That's a civil violation that's processed administratively, it's not remotely Trumpian fascism. That's every administration since the 1980's immigration reforms.

I'm obviously against all that and immigration system in general, but none of these idiots have ever bitched about it before in their lives until they heard it was affecting some privileged "genocide" protester.

Arguing that English proficiency is a racist requirement for an English VA role is certainly a take.

The federal government violated this principle when it sent agents to arrest Columbia University alumnus Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist who was politically engaged on the Columbia campus before graduating last spring. Initially, agents said they were revoking his student visa. But Khalil is not a student; he is a permanent resident of the United States married to an American citizen. The agents apparently changed their story when they learned this and said they were revoking his green card. According to Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, Khalil was arrested “in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism.” How in the world can this be grounds for an arrest?

Secretary of State Marco Rubio doubled down on this trampling of basic rights in saying that Khalil’s activities were “aligned with Hamas,” and therefore illegal. “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported,” he added.

But the system is working?

On Monday, a federal judge in Manhattan barred the administration from deporting Khalil and scheduled a detention hearing for Wednesday as demonstrators rallied in his support.

This also makes Schumer's commenting on the anti-Semitism more appropriate since it doesn't allow the administration to say he supports that and that's why he's "just asking questions" about this guy.

Green card can be revoked because of an actual crime though, and I think that's what the administration is trying to make people think they're saying. And Schumer is cutting through that to demand what the crime is. His statement is more effective than the general "THIS IS FASCISM" bitching.

I've never heard of that requirement in other countries' dubbing industry. Japanese voice actors already got a job for voicing the Japanese voice track, nobody's taking away their job. But you're trying to argue based on jobs when I'm pointing out a racist practice in the entertainment industry that others foreign people. "Oh look, this character speaks broken English, so authentic!" Ugh.
