The new thread was over 500 posts before I saw it so that’s on me for getting angry and focusing on something someone posted near the end instead of reading the whole thing. But in general I’m just trying to make a point about the lack of empathy here. First of all, it’s weird af…. like it’s not normal to have these types of reactions, and a lot of em are just people trying to drop a 🔥 take for attention.

Honestly I don’t even care about this story, like it’s not any more important than people getting shot up in philly every weekend. But I do care about this place and reading some of the posts in these threads puts me in a mood where I don’t wanna chip in anymore and I doubt I’m alone in that.

Trust me, I totally get you. There's a reason we blew up at everyone the other day. To put it kindly, some people think that because it's ok to celebrate when the worst people in the world die then that means it's ok to do whenever you want. That the ends can justify the means, even when the ends accomplish nothing.

Part of the problem is this sort of thing is normalized on social media platforms like Twitter without any real pushback. As a result it spreads to the rest of the internet and the rest of us are stuck with trying to remind people about basic empathy.

The currency of Twitter, tictok, and the rest is hot takes. That's how you get likes and views and grow a following. Essentially these platforms train us to be assholes to everyone so that we can win the game that is social media.

We're going to have a discussion about coming down a lot harder on this shit in threads where it isn't warranted. There's certain situations where it is warranted, but people take that to mean they can do it anywhere and that's not ok. Like, I totally get where you're coming from. I literally don't give a rats ass about this story, I spend my days trying to help fix actual problems in the world at work, but people being toxic shitlords has made me need to give this story the time of day and I hate that.

Being a person shouldn't be hard, but apparently it is. And what really kills me is how eager people are to use ideology to hide behind, as if that doesn't hurt the larger movement and make the rest of us look bad.

B-Dubs always seems so close to getting it, but then reverts to assuming the fix is just having the mods be more dedicated to enforcing arbitrary lines in the sand about right and wrong based on their own feels that users are supposed to intuit.

Members that appear to be using an obituary thread solely to post about how glad they are that person is dead may be moderated. This does not preclude sober criticism of a person's legacy or mistakes in life. We simply do not want to celebrate death. Context will matter, and some individuals have done things so heinous that rare exceptions may need to be made.
