I think that when Trump is re-elected in November and a Muslim ban is reenabled, private armies start being deployed to blue states, migrants in this country are being hunted down for deportation, and LGBTQ rights are stripped away and my family has to move very to another country to ensure my daughter will be safe-we can look back at an episode like this and say "Maybe focusing on Biden's age wasn't the top most important thing to focus on in the debut episode."

Anecdotally, the extreme rhetoric have left people indifferent towards a 2nd Trump term. Often prefaced with “I’m not voting for him,” a wink and a nudge, they look back at his term and Biden’s term, and day to day don’t see a relatable positive change. They only note the economy and what impacts their daily lives. Some guy once said something about how you can’t eat equality. 

It’s also a little skewed how the first tree years were pre-covid. That time fucked a lot of people up in the head. There’s a nostalgia for the time before and attribute it to Trump. But also ignore that last year of Trump’s presidency started with gassing up war with Iran, the handling of the pandemic, the riots, etc.

Man, maybe democracy does suck. Only four more years of this shit until AI Reagan is elected as the forever president.

I know we've all seen videos of black people being murdered by police. That's awful, disgusting, unforgivable and makes us lose hope in humanity. I'm a white male so I've obviously not had it as bad as others. My question is has anyone ever experienced it first hand?

I have had a few run ins. I'll start with the less bad ones. I've been pulled over a couple of times and the officers were always really nice in these cases. Things like a tail light out, license plate light out, or a 'California stop' (slowly rolling through a stop sign). I've never had a ticket or anything.

So one experience really haunts me. A coworker invited me over to his house to have some drinks. He was an older guy (I was in my twenties and he in his fifties). This was 9 years ago. I got a ride to the store to get beer, and then to his house. I knew he had a drinking problem so I probably shouldn't have encouraged it, but I figured he was drinking anyway so he might like some company (he didn't have many friends).

So we have some beers, talk, have a good time. I had 12 beers and I'm done. I'm about to leave and he says he's going to drive to the store to get more beer. Obviously he shouldn't drive so I tell him to stay put and I'll walk and get him some. It was a couple miles away to the nearest store (small town) so I walk and talk on the phone to my girlfriend and tell her the situation. Even send a pic on my walk back or me looking disgruntled carrying beer.

I show up to his house and he asks me to have another beer with him. So I do. Then after a bit of time he jumps up and says he's going to be sick and runs to the bathroom. Thing is he never comes out. He died in the bathroom.

I'm drunk so I'm really slow on the uptake and check on him like 45 minutes after he went in. He isn't moving or responding so I call 911.

First on the scene is police. They go check on him and tell me he's dead. I was just in complete shock. Then they ask me what happened and I told them, and then they start asking questions that strike me as strange. Things like 'were you guys arguing?' or 'at what point did you start fighting?'

So I tell them honestly because obviously we weren't fighting or arguing. Then from my story they asked if I drove his truck to the store when I went to get more beer. I said no, and showed them the picture I sent to my girlfriend. Then they ask if they can hold the phone and have it for a really long time. I asked what they were doing, and they said reading my text messages. I let it be known I never said they could but it fell on deaf ears. My girlfriend tried calling because I had sent her a message when they arrived and they actually answered my phone and started asking her questions. NEVER give your phone to police.

I asked if I could have the phone back and they said no. They kept asking specific timelines and because I was drunk my time frames changed. Then they told me they were under the impression I beat him to death.

Scariest moment of my life.

They kept questioning me while an officer was going through my phone. They asked questions like 'why is there hair in the sink' to which I responded 'I think he must have shaved recently?'

Long story short never hand over your phone to officers. I was released after two hours of fucked up questioning. The cause of death was later revealed to be a heart attack.

Long story short; never show officers evidence that's on your phone.

They keep saying the "wrong" lesson is being learned by Hollywood execs. Well, what's the "right" lesson, then? Because the current lesson seems to lead to movies bombing. The people that scream the loudest about the "male focused" audience don't even buy/consume the shit they advocate for. At least not in the numbers where it matter. It is the male audience that they love to shit on that often still go to see these movies/buy these products, ironically enough.

How long did they expect these companies to release commercial bombs and lose money on them before they start changing course? Seems they forgot companies actually want to make money, not just be charity cases for left-wing/diversity causes and viewpoints.

They're also completely, like normal, erasing all the successes. Even in their narrowly obsessed fields: the two Black Panther films. Even despite the second one starring a transphobic anti-vax chud.

On the OG Bore I called on Nepenthe, Neoxon and the rest to actually "celebrate and spotlight Black Excellence" and they never fucking do. Same with all the LGBT+ media. Same with any other diversity in movies, video games, TV shows, etc. It's nothing but ceaseless whining about how something isn't diverse enough or other attempts at diversity are wrong somehow (a favorite being the demands for racist caricatures in Deep Rock Galactic) while handwringing that garbage with superficial diversity failing means "capitalists" will demand the abolition of anything but cishet white males in all media.

When the latter situation was never the case anyway and hasn't been for all of these people's lives. The biggest star on TV when pretty much all of these people were children was Bill Cosby, a rising crossover star from sports was O.J. Simpson and the world's biggest music performer was Michael Jackson.

While I understand why and how AI is a contentious topic it's getting a bit old to see people run here to complain about specific threads existing or not existing and what people say or not in said threads. Not to backseat mod or anything, but if a thread is still open for discussion you can talk about it there and report any posts that you feel are breaking any rules or guidelines.

I don't post here often (probably my first time) but I wanted to say that I've noticed this trend in various threads - not necessarily AI related - and it's pretty frustrating when you're trying to have (or simply follow) a constructive discussion. And this constant brigading - let's not mince words, it's exactly what it is - to get certain topics closed is often accompanied by a misrepresentation of the discussion (as seen a few posts above), severe tone-policing from certain posters, and obvious ban-baiting. I find it embarrassing and shameful regardless of the topic - again, it's not AI specific. As FliX said earlier: ignore threads if they bother you; not everything has to cater to you.

And this isn't a dig at mods at all, in fact it reminded me how much I appreciate and 100% don't envy them.  But I just want to say, I don't think the framing of the thread had anything to do with the failure of that conversation, at all.

I encourage people to go re-read the OP.  It was neither 'hype I can get the thing I wanted, screw you boomers', nor was it 'if you think AI might have potential upsides, head on over to Twitter, leave Era'.  And to be clear, both types of responses were in that thread - they just weren't in the OP.

I'm not surprised the thread closed.  They all seem to end up the same in the end, which I suspect is why containment seemed appealing in the first place.

But putting the failure of that conversation on an OP that didn't paint a spin on the topic either way - just reported what happened, and left the community to discuss - seems disingenuous to me, and seems like pinning the blame where it doesn't belong.

Oh, the framing definitely did lead to what we saw in that thread. One of the things I've learned doing this job is that an OP can really set the tone and tenor of a discussion to a degree most people don't understand. If you want to have a discussion about how something might be an issue, then that's what needs to be in your OP. You need to actively describe the issue you have and lay it out for people. You can't do a generic thread and then expect it to go a specific way just because. This is how threads go off the rails the way they do, if the framing is bad, or just too neutral, then it'll just turn into stupid arguments for pages and pages and pages where people talk past each other and piss everyone off.

If you want to have a discussion about how AI can lead to important medical discoveries or aid in fact checking or help programmers cut down on their workloads then that needs to be the framing. If you want to have a discussion about how AI can lead to job losses in creative industries or misinformation or an increase in revenge porn and harassment then that needs to be the framing. All a general framing of a topic does is allow for all of that discussion to take place in the same thread. This leads to everyone feeling like everyone else is talking past them and results in an incredibly hostile environment that turns out badly for everyone, including those of us who need to clean up the mess after.

This, I will note, is why derailing threads with other issues can also be bad. It results in the same dynamic. Imagine a thread about how AI is aiding in new medical discoveries getting derailed by people mad about how it's being used to do art and put artists out of business (or vice versa). That thread will almost certainly go badly due to the derail since people would be talking past each other on issues that matter a lot to both sides. Everyone would get pissed off and accuse everyone else of being a jackass and everyone would be "right". It would just lead to toxic community dynamics. It's generally why we hit attempted derails the way we do. They never go anywhere good.
