So this is somewhat based on something I saw a day or two ago, but it's also just a culmination of things that I feel the need to rant about. The thing specifically that grinded my gears recently was that I saw someone (on a different site) post a bunch of videos of women enthusiastically talking about the Stellar Blade demo, and using them as examples of "see? Women love this game, all the game journos talking about how sexist it is are clueless".

And it's just... infuriating. Especially so because I'm the kind of person to gush over things like Vanillaware games and other games that have sexualised character designs. I know for a fact I've been propped up as a woman having the "right opinion" before, like the time I was gifted gold on Reddit (by a man, they made sure to tell me that in their grossly "flattering" DM they sent me) several years ago for having a mild disagreement with another woman about characters in a game, to give one example of a few I remember. After things like this happening a few times throughout the years, I've since been somewhat cautious of how I word things, as there's nothing more frustrating than being used as a shield by these chuds just because I'm generally not too fazed by sexualised character designs - doesn't mean I absolutely adore them either (heavily depends on context), but just because I have a relatively high threshold for these kinda things, it doesn't somehow invalidate other women's criticisms or concerns.

And I have plenty of my own criticisms for depictions and designs of female characters in games, but I feel like I've been so desensitised to this shit over the years, that I find myself only particularly vocal when it's especially egregious, out of place/atmosphere destroying, embarrassing or otherwise just blatantly misogynistic. I'm very grateful to everyone that can muster the energy to call out this shit whenever they see it, and voicing my own criticisms is something I never would have even entertained the thought of doing on the internet 10+ years ago, since it was often just inviting ridicule, gaslighting or worse for those that dared.

I think the whole thing with women enjoying the game being used as shields by chuds is one of the things that's being bugging me the most about Stellar Blade. It's a game I was initially a little interested in, and I likely still would be if I didn't find the demo so meh. But seeing people bringing up how their wives/gfs have no issue with the game as some kinda "gotcha", or pointing to women on YouTube singing the game's praises and I'm just like... Is this really how far some guys are willing to go to wilfully ignore any and all concerns of misogyny whenever it's mildly inconvenient for them? And to play it off like they actually care about what women think when they only care about what the "right" women think, or what women have the opinions that most align with their own or are least threatening to them... It's not even a mildly convincing smokescreen.

So.... don't listen to women?

Only listen to them if they have the correct opinion.

Hard-R is a slang primarily used in the US, it seems completely plausible that this was unintentional and the intent was much different seeing as the developer is situated in Asia where the slang isn't being used. I'm from Europe and speak English at a quite high level, I have only ever heard this term when the LTT debacle happened and wouldn't have caught this either.

This game has plenty of issues, but this ain't it and there's a bunch of US-defaultism going around with how people jump to conclusions on the intent of this. The developer said it's unintentional and is being removed, unless someone from the development team comes forward to say this was done as a racist remark then there really isn't much to say here as it's a plausible mishap due to an Asian artist somewhere not knowing US centric slang.

Now the sexism on the other hand, that deserves to be talked about as it's a lot more blatant.

Yeah, Eve doesn't own her sexuality, it's entirely for the player to ogle her while she acts innocent.

It's creepy in the same way "Alpha Males" talk about wanting virgins who are innocent and don't know anything about sex and need a man to teach her. It's about control, and they can't control a woman who's confident and aware of who she is.

An excellent post. I caught a ton of shit for voicing my opinion on Stellar Blade some months back, and it can be very frustrating when those dingle-berries will put their fingers in their ears and go "LA-LA-LA-LAH!" and will ignore some very real problems that are plaguing the video game industry.

And while this is more of a me thing, I find there comes a point where you have to recognize that you're engaging with people who have literally nothing better to do with their lives,

Yes, absolutely. I don't have any problems with anyone enjoying the game, but the active dismissal of any issues has annoyed me a lot, and I've seen a few outlets/reviewers + streamers do it. It also seems extra absurd to do so as part of the game's advertising point is how sexualized and objectified Eve is -- the developers have openly talked about their focus on it! -- so to gloss over it or underplay it doesn't make sense in the first place.

The thing that has bothered me the most about SB discourse isn't that people are enjoying the game, whatever floats your boat, but the dismissiveness a lot of the discourse from both people at large but also more established voices have had for the criticisms about the game. There's been several YouTube channels I've followed and enjoyed for years who have covered the discourse in some minor way and it always comes off as super dismissive of a lot of the arguments around why people take issue with it.

Writing on Games is the most recent one to stick out to me () when they covered the criticism in the final part of that video. It's super clear when people just haven't critically engaged at all with genuine arguments around something, because his defence of why it's 'not that bad' is part of the reason I take so much issue with the design in the first place and find it both distracting and gross - that the game as a whole isn't sexual at all and Eve being textually a non-sexual, non-emotive entity in the writing isn't the defence of the design that people seem to think it is.
I dunno I just wanted to vent because it's been frustrating watching people whose opinions I have found generally insightful in the past just... wilfully ignore genuine arguments around this topic for essentially the entire sake of being dismissive of it.

It's so weird. Like how do they not notice the cognitive dissonance? There are women who like Stellar Blade, not just in a "oh I'm so desensitized" way but in a "she serves cunt" way. And why wouldn't there be? Niki Minaj twerks inside a room filled with disembodied asses (that's the literal definition of objectification) and it's empowering. They complain they're being ignored in favor of those women and yet demand that you ignore those other women.

But I guess it's not really weird because their whole argument is based on the idea that sexualization is objectively bad. If some women actually liked it it implies that this could be a subjective matter which means they don't hold complete authority over the argument anymore.

I can tell you this about Morrigan. Mentioned before I shared a Discord server with her from like 2016 to 2020. So she hilariously have experienced male gaze from the nerdy NeoGAF/Resetera crowd which she definitely played on big time. The thing about Morrigan her bitching about things is never out of ethics or morals or whatever, it's about herself, she's incredibly self servant. So when she's crying about this Stellar Blade or other games it's entirely out of jealousy that she have no tits or ass, but also the fact how dare people like things that she doesn't, she's a 40-something year old woman who still haven't grasped the concept that people might like different things than her. But if you kiss her ass constantly and like the same exact things as her, she's gonna be the sweetest person ever. But if not you'll get the rude and bitchy person you see on Resetera.
