It's true that they could salvage a lot (and I mean a lot) from the Wii U failure. Doesn't change that this was objectively a bigger (probably still the not biggest) flop in videogame history compared to this. The company Nintendo as a whole struggled because of this console launch, while this Concord trainwreck wont impact Sony to that degree.
And I disagree that there will nothing come out of this. It's way to early too tell. Sony could learn that their live service initiate was too big and start to invest more into singleplayer games for example.

Wii U bomb was far more impactful, as it caused Nintendo to alter the very structure of their company. But they were never in any danger of going under, because of their huge warchest.
Concord bomb was more shocking in just how low the numbers could possibly be. It's insane it never broke seven hundred CCU on steam. Never seen a game rejection quite as absolute, given the budget.
3DS started sluggish but came back to be a success, much like the PS3. It's absurd to claim that the 3DS was a bigger bomb than the Wii U, with 75 mil vs 13 mil.

Dunno if I will say put them out of business, but it was a failure followed by they initially struggling with the 3DS.
I think WiiU is a bigger failure than Concord (itself is a weird comparison, but Console Wars are eternal) because everyone expected better after the success of the Wii while Concord was send to die.
Is a foolish comparison, I dunno why some of you guys are hang up with it. The WiiU development and life cycle probably costed more than life cycle of Concord.

They were safe cause the Wii and DS were massive hits. If the switch had also had Wii U level sales then yeah they’d be in trouble. The big misconception with Wii -> Wii U is that it is always portrayed as a big sudden drop, even though the decline had already started years earlier.
You see sharp drops across the Nintendo portfolio starting from DSi -> 3DS -> Wii Mini -> Wii U. Not to mention Nintendo was selling Wii's at $99 or lower with a game packed in, which padded the install base numbers but meant low margins on hardware and low software attach ratios. I believe they sold the Wii Mini at $49 or something. Software sales are the same story, games like Skyward Sword and Metroid Other M did not sell as well as they should've on Wii considering the size of the install base. After Wii peaked in 2008 or 2009 or so it steadily kept going down. A lot of Wii owners only bought the Wii + Wii Sports and those systems are probably still collecting dust in closets the world over.
The big 'win' of the Switch is that they continue to sell it at high margins with a very high software attach ratio.
The Xbox Series X is not seen as such a big of a failure as the Wii U as it looks like another 'logical' step down from the already failed Xbox One.
Spencer also likes to point that losing against PS4 with Xbox One already stacked the deck against them.

Are gamers finally getting tired of the same open world slop Ubisoft makes?
I also think people mistrust the quality of AAA Star Wars games, given that Jedi Survivor is still broken.
The 4th Star Wars movie sitting in development hell for years artificially inflated its popularity by accident. The heavy push for books in the 90’s recaptured the casual market on the potential for a new film, as well as spiked the sales for Star Wars merch, and finally the Special Edition’s kept up the heat until the reveal of the official 4th film. What came afterwards was mixed, but Star Wars was still limited to official live action productions. The ramping up of these movies has absolutely killed the franchise’s popularity. Disney would be better off putting it on ice until fans beg for its return.
I am looking forward to the trainwrecks that will be the PS4, Xbox One verisons of Jedi Survivor.

But it's because this problem doesn't exist in a vacuum. i.e. It's Aonuma's comment, but against the ENTIRE backdrop of gaming and the general state of how this planet deals with women in these gaming spaces and beyond.
So in this world, which includes gaming spots, women are treated worse than men. Whether it's female devs being harassed, reporters, voice actors, or the standards that female characters must be super hot or face a deluge of criticism to studios (female facial capture people are even getting harassed for not being attractive enough), or that women are constantly sexualized (especially compared to male characters), or that female esports/online players/reporters are often harassed online, or in the real world where women are prevented from advancing in their careers for their gender, where women now need to beware of men using their faces for AI deepfakes , or where women coming out against harassmers falls on deaf ears and lots of victim-blaming (or the flipside; we excuse known harassers). Asian countries are, sadly and statistically shown for being a bad place for women to live based on pay gaps, social status, assaults, unprotective laws, and a slew of other socio-economic factors (and this very much includes Japan).
And if we don't treat women fairly in the real world, then it's super likely they won't be treated right even in gaming, working, digital, or other spaces (and we don't).
(I could posted a lot more relevant links but I'm tired 😩 lol).
Zelda being told she can't be the hero when her name is on every box, or reasons for often being 'absent' in her games, is just salt in the wound... It's generations of women told how they won't be the ones to go on a big adventure, or how they don't compare to their male counterparts (getting different gameplay gimmicks, often "female coded" ones), or aren't worth being a hero but a support character. People are asking the questions of WHY, and the answers we get are often very unsatisfying.
Aonuma's comment, as mentioned, casts a long shadow that seems to generally reflect the state of playable female characters in major Nintendo properties that still exists. – It's better! But it persists.
Aonuma saying "What will Link do if Zelda is the star" is depressing because it completely ignores and highlights the question if it were reversed, which is the often common state of the Zelda series: "If Link is the hero, what will Zelda do?" and the answer has been to largely sideline her, or funny enough, given contradictory examples as to what her appeal is in the rare game she DOES get control. But it's often more bite-sized, or we get arbitrary-like conditions like Zelda can't wield a sword in EoW (unless she's channeling the blank-slate male hero) and relies on other work around methods to dish damage... I like that they're trying to make her play differently (truly!) ...but also in some other lines of questioning: Why do they have to go such lengths to make these conditions for a female hero? 🤨
Why can't we just be? Why can't THE Zelda get her own AAA experience? In 40 years of Zelda, why is it so hard to be different? (Especially when the demand for it is growing).
You know why people have low opinion of Dice? Because she complains about sexism while supporting transexual grifters like Laura Kate.

The original Wii was a GameCube with a Bluetooth connector. They were making bank on day 1 at $250. Granted by doing this they’ve been technically behind one generation since.
Quote:So, the add was for a website called Spoonful of Comfort. The gist of the add is a lady who says she is sick, and her friend sent her a "care pack." The care pack had two 32-ounce soups, some cookies, and some rolls....for $100.
Now, the premise of this is the lady is sick. So now, she has to go get her kettle and pour the soup in it which means she'll be doing dishes while sick. So, 64 ounces of soup she has to warm up and eat before too long because they are not canned.
I dunno. This seems like a concept that could've ended immediately after somebody in the focus group asked, "Why wouldn't a person just DoorDash their friend some soup from Bob Evans since its already hot and ready to eat and comes with rolls AND it'll be there within 40 minutes instead of being shipped FedEx?"
I feel like the number of rip-offs that are blatant rip-offs these days is growing. And yes, I recognize the irony in talking about rip-offs when it comes to fees DoorDash sneaks in.

They were nowhere near real trouble during the Wii U. They had enough cash to keep them afloat for decades at Wii U level losses. But its failure did alter the structure of their company, since they wanted to return to profitability, not just slowly bleed cash.

I don’t have many negative opinions about Early Access games like many others do… but this is just ERA justifying bad leadership not be able to see how badly something was going to get received and how trends were changing.
The part they they seem to be missing is that indie devs usually do this because they don't have any other way to gather more feedback. By all accounts Sony should have plenty of resources to asses whether a game is worthwhile. From testers to focus groups to even mock reviews written by actual journalists (ethics in games journalism anyone?)
Also I can't really think of MP shooters that started in early access. Launching a shooter with few maps, weapons and characters and have it be buggy on top seems like a different kind of death sentence
You can’t convince me this game wasn’t send to die, they just didn’t expect the Megabomba that they were going to get. I feel that everyone at Sony knew they had a failure to deal from past leadership.
Is laughable to entertain the notion that “no one knew” about how was gonna get received.
I genuinely think they were convinced it was gonna be a slow burn, build momentum, then release on PS+ kind of sleeper hit.
They fucked up.
