The response from the dev is also a bit confusing as she blames the bad characters on the executives and "design by committee" but then also talks about how critiquing the characters hurts her feelings personally.

I sort of feel bad for that dev. If this is their first game they’ll have to either put that on their next application, or have to explain the situation in the interview. Because who the fuck wants the person responsible for the awful characters in the biggest console disasters ever?

It was not design by committee, it was design by ideology, and she knows it and buys into that ideology, and that's why she's taking it personally. Trying to blame the suits for her own character designs is absurd. The game was almost done when Sony picked them up.

Well, if anyone from Firewalk happens to be lurking this thread:

Yall made the first FPS that has resonated with me since TF2. The rest of the gaming audience either didn't care or cares so much about hating your game for no reason its fucking weird, but I for one had an absolute blast and saw everything you were going for with this game and to me you succeeded in spades.

Thank you for making a game that encourages teamwork and flexibility in ways others dont, and for inviting us into your weird and wild world full of colorful and diverse characters that arent just designed around motivating spending on content or appeasing horny straight men. Thank you for making a game that respects me as a player, and my time.

Now I go back to basically never playing a PVP FPS again because there's really nothing out there like this game.
Yall didnt get the chance to prove how good this game to be and theres no way to express how much this situation sucks. I hope for the best for everyone on this wonderful team.

Part of me unironically agrees there can be a level of cruelty in criticism. And for artists are people too so you shouldn't be mean reasoning, not a single person actually believes it. It's always the reaping/sowing of fanboys. You can't be mean to Concord, but Hogwart's Legacy deserves it. Those artists knew they were doing.

She was definitely a scientologist 10-11 years ago. (So was Beck, who I listen to, so I can't pretend to be on a moral high horse here.) The only source for the Masterson stuff is a comment left by the singer of The Mars Volta, who was a scientologist and left. The letters that people wrote in defense of Masterson are public record so if she did, it'll get out there eventually.

It's something I'd keep an eye on but I'm just going to enjoy this for now and worry about something maybe being a shitty person later.

Yeah I get why she'd be upset but that anger should be directed at but those supposed evil higher-ups that forced them to create shit characters.
You can't seriously demand that people stop criticizing your characters when they objectively failed on every level. Like they should seriously be in design books on how not to do it because how often do you get a real life example of characters that factually didn't resonate with anyone. (Though like Pogi I really question that some executive suit would demand gender neutral, trans, fat etc. characters.)
