OP wrote:Layoffs in the video game industry reached a high water mark this year. Beloved studios are fading away. Concord happened. It feels like greedy suits with dollar signs for eyes have sucked half the life out of gaming in one year alone. Capitalism is busted and it's hurting games.

Is communism any better? Or is it even worse? Black Myth Wukong sold like 80 million copies but thanks to all of the regressive censorship PR demanded , the game seems to have left a bad taste.

Mean while, China does not produce very many global video games. Maybe the don't have to.

I thought capitalism was worse for video games, but now I'm not sure. What do you think?

Platy wrote:Communism is better if you like indie games
ideally everyone would have the means to work their hobbies and this would be amazing for small indie games

Capitalsm is better if you like AAA games, as they are the ones more geared towards profit and enrichment

So communism
Quote:Politics is certainly not that black and white.

But in an ideal "optimal" world where we don't really need to worry about money, because our society is run efficiently by computers/robots and humans only chip in with as much work as they like and can spend the rest of their time on hobbies, I do think we'd see a lot more great indies and smaller sized games, but the giant AAA offerings might just take ten years each to make. Unless passionate developers improve the open-source tools so much that making games is much faster and more efficient and everyone involved is all in and loving the process and okay, I'm just rambling at this point.

I've voted communism.
Platy wrote:Concord is uniquely a failure of capitalism in the sense that is a failure that can only exist in capitalism.

It's failure is basically because executives saw something making money, put A LOT of money into making more (because more money = more profit) and didn't considered that after the time it takes to make it, the market would be overcrowded.
Concord's budget and how it failed is connectec to capitalism because AAA and profit seeking GaaS games are insanely connected to capitalism.

Communism would not have AAA and would not have GaaS because it is not a profit centered system
Mauricio_Magus wrote:Communism requires an international effort that I don't think we'll see in our lifetimes, sadly.
Also Capitalism is going to end humanity so... I guess Capitalism is worse for gaming because gaming will not even exist in the future.
And China isn't even communist, technically speaking no country can even be communist because communism requires the end of the state or whatever the fuck, whatever.
Quote:There are no communist countries in the world today. One could argue there has never been one, period.
SCIENCE!

Quote:Considering the stated goal of Communism is to allow the laborer freedom to pursue their own interests and goals for the sake of fulfillment, I don't see why gaming couldn't exist under such a society. Granted they likely wouldn't be to the scale we know them as today but they'd probably be far more diverse, personal and interesting.
Uh, no it's not. lol

Chief Malik wrote:China's uses a hybrid system that combines market mechanisms with strong state control and socialist values. Unlike let's say…. the states (where I'll just assume OP is from), China's focus is on long-term development, poverty alleviation, and collective welfare. It has lifted millions out of poverty, avoiding the pitfalls of unchecked market systems like in the states. China's approach is about prioritizing social stability and communal progress over PURE profit. Look into the fall of the soviet union and how they went out in their way to avoid that without becoming a neoliberal wasteland like the states.

Quote:It's people named Jeff, if people would stop naming their kids Jeff, everything would work out.

Then two guys reply to Chief Malik:
Quote:That is a WILDLY charitable explanation of how China works.

Have you ever been to China? One of my oldest friends has lived there for nearly 10 years, and the day to day he experiences is not at all China prioritizing long-term development, poverty alleviation, and communal progress. At all.
Quote:You are regurgitating government propaganda.
- China has some of the poorest social safety net, it is tiered and CCP officials get the best stuff
- China has some of the highest real estate prices in the world even after years of declining (yes, worse than the US now: check out what "six wallets" mean)
- China does not really have universal healthcare, its system is again, tiered, and poor, rural people get the worst healthcare
- China tries to achieve social stability by the most oppressive panopticon-like surveillance system ever exists
- The criteria of China's "lifting poverty" is extremely low; still 600 million people lives on <$150 a month

I've seen such rhetoric spouted by ignorant westerners so many times I've lost count.

China doesn't have *strong state control*; the state acts like a company: a (many elite) family-owned, dynastic company, much like the zaibatsu in Japan. It is owned by the elites, not any one of us.

And B-Dubs races in to the rescue with the lock:
B-Dubs wrote:Do we really need to do this? All these sorts of threads do is turn into ideological slap fights while the people who lived in places like China get ignored when they talk about what life is like for them.

Even though the bulk of the thread was just people making jokes or mocking the OP before Platy and Malik took it seriously.

Pftt, don't people remember all those classic soviet games like tetris and... um???

It's basically buy me a coffee. So originally you created something and added a 'pay what you want' link to your website or post so people could donate some money as a thank you.

But now you can create a sob story (my cat has been eaten by a Haitian) and ask people for donations to pay for the cremation. Or simply post that you are retarded but need money for the Xbox retard controller.

I dunno if they even got to use the alt, as I remember that 1 month ban became permanent very quickly.
I noticed in a lot of posts they made, they use the word "folks". Might not be too difficult to find a list of all the people that frequently use that word and look through if any of them are banned as well, but thats work

Here is the actual interview

He has a point that if you work in the game industry, with that type of education, you'll probably land a new job within a year or so.
Still the other side of the coin is what Harada posted the other day

Kutaragi's goal was not to make 10% more profit, his goal was to BUILD THE MATRIX or some shit.
At the same time you had developers who weren't looking for stable employment or anything like that but simply wanted to be at the front of that exciting new industry and make the best game they could possibly make.

The current crop of both developers and executives are just wired differently and with all the rules, regulations and norms it is harder to start a business and release a product.
You can't just rent an office space, have 20 or so college drop outs live there, give them a bunch of devkits and say: "We ship Final Fantasy 7 this holiday season for this new 3D console that isn't even finished yet". Funny enough, when you actually do have the balls to do that and hire some truely unemployable people, you might strike gold like the Palworld guys did.

I think David Jaffe expressed it well - there's a line out the door of young people that are wanting to get in the gaming industry, that they can afford to pay them cheaper than other tech sectors.   Add that to the fact that the gaming market experiences more lulls than other tech sectors and the oversaturation periods are more common - there's always stopgaps before the industry figures out where the market wants to expand: mobile, cloud, etc while figuring out how to manage the bloated costs of big game dev with better tech. These companies also have more freedom and flexibility to hire freelance to manage peak workloads without long-term commitments, especially for artists, animators, and designers than ever before.  It's just inherently not going to be stable - but there are so any employment opportunities outside of games that employees can transfer their skills to.  Of course it absolutely sucks when anyone gets laid off, but out of anyone who would ever get laid off, these kinds of people will probably be ok.  The tech industry, retail and e-commerce, film/animation, marketing, education tech, healthcare, vr/ai startups, automotive - there's so many other industries that they can lend their skills to.  There's no need to scream that the sky is falling.  For many people gamedev is a dream job, so there's not going to be a perfect amount of opportunities per the amount of people that want to work there - just chill out and take another job elsewhere for the time being if you still want to pursue your dream.  Or I guess you can screech about the evils of capitalism because you don't get whatever you want at all times.
