big brother 1 was largely like that, people voted out the assholes and instigators pretty quick, which incentivized the rest to generally be nice and friendly, but people still watched due to the novel truman show-esque concept

Layoffs in the video game industry reached a high water mark this year. Beloved studios are fading away. Concord happened. It feels like greedy suits with dollar signs for eyes have sucked half the life out of gaming in one year alone. Capitalism is busted and it's hurting games.

Is communism any better? Or is it even worse? Black Myth Wukong sold like 80 million copies but thanks to all of the regressive censorship PR demanded , the game seems to have left a bad taste.

Mean while, China does not produce very many global video games. Maybe the don't have to.

I thought capitalism was worse for video games, but now I'm not sure. What do you think?

The cure (or improvement) for capitalism isn't communism, it's capitalistic socialism.

Communism is better if you like indie games
ideally everyone would have the means to work their hobbies and this would be amazing for small indie games

Capitalsm is better if you like AAA games, as they are the ones more geared towards profit and enrichment

Politics is certainly not that black and white.

But in an ideal "optimal" world where we don't really need to worry about money, because our society is run efficiently by computers/robots and humans only chip in with as much work as they like and can spend the rest of their time on hobbies, I do think we'd see a lot more great indies and smaller sized games, but the giant AAA offerings might just take ten years each to make. Unless passionate developers improve the open-source tools so much that making games is much faster and more efficient and everyone involved is all in and loving the process and okay, I'm just rambling at this point.

Concord is uniquely a failure of capitalism in the sense that is a failure that can only exist in capitalism.

It's failure is basically because executives saw something making money, put A LOT of money into making more (because more money = more profit) and didn't considered that after the time it takes to make it, the market would be overcrowded.
Concord's budget and how it failed is connectec to capitalism because AAA and profit seeking GaaS games are insanely connected to capitalism.

There are no communist countries in the world today. One could argue there has never been one, period.

Considering the stated goal of Communism is to allow the laborer freedom to pursue their own interests and goals for the sake of fulfillment, I don't see why gaming couldn't exist under such a society. Granted they likely wouldn't be to the scale we know them as today but they'd probably be far more diverse, personal and interesting.

China's uses a hybrid system that combines market mechanisms with strong state control and socialist values. Unlike let's say…. the states (where I'll just assume OP is from), China's focus is on long-term development, poverty alleviation, and collective welfare. It has lifted millions out of poverty, avoiding the pitfalls of unchecked market systems like in the states. China's approach is about prioritizing social stability and communal progress over PURE profit. Look into the fall of the soviet union and how they went out in their way to avoid that without becoming a neoliberal wasteland like the states.

China doesn't have *strong state control*; the state acts like a company: a (many elite) family-owned, dynastic company, much like the zaibatsu in Japan. It is owned by the elites, not any one of us.
