Because they are all literal minded, comic book readers, who only care about plot and nothing else.  Movies are just a series of events strung together. 

Also they need to know if the character is good so they can agree with him and support the movie or bad and blame the movie for promoting him as the main chacter

I have also seen a sizable shift in rhetoric here and elsewhere so I think the constant flow of horror is affecting. Calling this a genocide is much more common than it was.
