The attempt to paint me as classist for saying statistically the items handed into lost & found do not go back to the original owner is quite amusing considering I'm probably one of the lowest paid members of this forum. And it doesn't even line up with my viewpoint that y'all disagree with because clearly I'm saying that taking home an abandoned item is not theft. I just think it's naive to believe that employees at places don't take things home. Really the main disconnect with the responses I've gotten in this thread is that you all seem to think that I was arguing the semantics of the law.
I wasn't. I don't really give a shit what it says in the New Jersey law about taking home abandoned items. Gonna let you in on a secret, I think a lot of laws are stupid. I, personally, wouldn't call someone who does that a thief in many situations (there are also situations where I would, it's just not black and white to me).

I think there is a very obvious and significant difference between someone who takes home an abandoned item they found and someone who directly takes a non-abandoned item from a person. And I think that people using the idea of "they were a thief" to downplay the doxxing are in the wrong.

I recognize that, clearly, most people here don't agree with me. But what you see as "doubling down" is just me not changing my mind. Because, yeah, I still feel the same way I did before. I think this thread had frankly been kind of ridiculous but whatever I am today's asshole everyone gets to take a dig at I guess, it's not the first time.

I’m not entirely sure what exactly Jonathan Holmes (Destructoid) has against learning something on the Internet. I mean, it is the leading source of information these days. Anyway, I assume Jonathan meant “things that are not necessarily true”, and that he simply wants an anti-harassment organization to succeed. A noble goal. I think organizations like that are needed. I wish they weren’t, but that’s sadly not the case.

However, an anti-harassment organization co-led by Alex Lifschitz is like an anger management class taught by Lobo. Not only a mistake, but a mistake of potentially severe consequences. And while Lobo is not real, Alex Lifschitz is, even if he does try to co-run an organization the acronym of which is a CON.

People behind #GamerGate face harassment and abuse just like anyone else involved in social movements, and this is a person with moral qualifications to run an anti-harassment organization?

To be absolutely clear, I never spoke to neither Alex Lifschitz nor Zoe Quinn, let alone attacked them. On the contrary, I once argued in favor of Zoe Quinn when discussing a statement I deeply disagreed with. That was after both of Lifschitz’s tweets, by the way.

And what I just showed, Mister Holmes, is the reason why I am one of those who hope that CON will, indeed, “fail”. Promoting an organization that is supposed to help the victims of online hate but is run by a hypocrite who actively tries to ruin strangers’ livelihood and life, is not something I can get behind.

At that time game journalists had been elevated to rockstar status. The industry was booming and rapidly changing. In the past the publishers spend most of their PR effort on retailers, print and the mainstream press. Trying to convince GameStop managers to stock their games and the New York Times to write about it and running ads in game magazines. With digital distribution and digital advertising becoming more important this no longer worked so they shifted their focus to gaming websites instead. Ironically those gaming websites were mostly founded as 'independent media'.

After a decade this shift was more or less completed but it had downsides. First, publishers forced journalists to play games on location to get favourable review scores, which resulted in 30 minutes of GTA and 48 hours of hookers and booze. Second: The Metacritic score became the 'holy grail' for quality control and even determined bonus pay-outs. Could you imagine that a retard like Jim Sterling is the deciding factor for your bonus pay-out? Third: Many of these man babies took advantage of their newfound status, they only started to report on things if there were enough perks attached and mostly just copy pasted the PR releases without criticism or comment.

Before Zoe Quinn, there had already been some incidents. For example someone had been banging an IGN editor just so she could leak the Wii U launch line-up and gain her own fame on the internet. Some websites also handed out 9s and 10s like candy to prop up the Metacritic. In 2012 Jeff Gerstman admitted he was fired for handing out a low review score for Kane & Lynch in 2007 because Gamespot was running ads for the game.

Enter GamerGate and indie development. After the economy crashed and developers lost their jobs, indie studios were formed. This inspired new developers to start indie studios too but it was a tough market to get into without industry recognition. The gaming press was curated by the gatekeeping gaming websites. So you only had a few avenues to be 'seen' or get funding. Either you had to make a damn good game that sold itself or you had to be featured in indie showcases and award shows but 'objectively' curating those awards shows were often the same 'gaming experts' hired by the boards of those shows.

Zoe Quinn cheated on her boyfriend and thus one such 'expert' elevated a talentless hack up the ladder in the indie scene. When the boyfriend told his story the woman would of course not take responsibility for her actions and the 'experts' said it was all lies from a disgruntled boyfriend. The community at this point was still divided on the matter because there wasn't much to go on. In fact the general consensus was the boyfriend was a cuck. At some point people started looking into it and it turned out that here was a clear link between who the experts were fucking/hanging/friendly with and who were getting the awards, funding and recognition. In fact in many cases the games featured never released or the developers dropped projects after receiving their prize money and fame. For the trolls this was actually 'funny' and 'lmao'. But people who had thus far defended Quinn and the indie scene were appalled. Some had put themselves into debt just to compete or worked without pay for 1 or 2 years to develop something that was deemed good enough by the 'experts' to be allowed into the competition. This is where the phrase: "it is about the ethics of gaming journalism" originated because there was a civil war within the indie community itsel. More and more indies started to turn on the journalists and the hacks they elevated while places like 4chan were eating popcorn and enjoying the show. 

By this time the Trump campaign was also gaining steam and the journalists quickly pointed to something entirely unrelated to sweep their conduct under the rug. Just like Trump was attacking and slandering his opponents with 'lies' and 'falsehoods' the 'gamers' were attacking them and trying to turn them against eachother (in fact very few gamers even understood what was going on or what it was about until AFTER they were blamed for the 'harassment campaign'). They stopped as curators of those awards because of 'harassment' and 'gamergate' and some of them fled into cozy corporate jobs thanks to all the connections they had build up at companies like Microsoft and Apple. But the damage was done and they had all ruined their reputation and that of the gaming press.

It just conceptually makes no sense to me. Trans people want the body type of the other gender, that's why they're trans for fucks sake and when you're offering just two body types it's a binary choice again, meaning this doesn't cater to non binary people either.
