What Are You Playing?

I'm playing through the Silent Hill 2 remake and I think I like it better than the OG.
It has a real sense of heaviness that I think the original...well, not lacked, but didn't pull off this well. I find myself turning the game off just because it's so unrelentingly oppressive. I'm not just using that as a synonym for difficult (it's kinda easy actually) or scary (I don't scare much when playing games). They really excelled at just....making the player feel like you are in a bad, upsetting place.

Just purchased a PS5 digital a few months back. Catching up on the games I missed as the Xbox is my primary.
TLOU2 - I generally hate games with stealth but this did not really bother me. Thought it was implemented pretty well and still allowed for plenty of gunplay. Story was hit and miss. The farm section was the worst. Just a little paradise devoid of enemies. Also turning Tommy into a gigantic pussy was stupid. Ended up liking Abby more than I thought I would. Did not really root for Abby or Ellie. People behaving shitty in a shitty situation. The only character I found any empathy for was Jesse. Guy shrugged off losing his girl and still helped Ellie out a couple times. Days Gone - Story was okay, got a bit repetitive with the side missions but the core gameplay and hordes made up for it. Felt like an open world TLOU with bikes and better enemies. Was sad Sony did not want to give a sequel but they are just too hard at work remastering everything. Loved the original Horizon game and was looking forward to playing the sequel but in a bitch move by Sony they removed the sequel from PS+ and raised the price of it all because they released a remaster of the original. Evil Sony doing evil Sony things. So playing the PS4 GOW and then the newest one. Never played the GOW Series so it should be interesting. Not my preferred type of combat but growing on me.

Started Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
New campaign is good, I love the 90s setting. Means that there is tech like helicopters and cameras and stuff but not everything can just be fixed with a drone.

Started Dragon Quest III HD-2D on the Nintendo Switch
It looks beautiful and sounds like a dream. I've just finished the tutorial area and made it to the first continent (kind of funny how this game had a closed off baby land like BOTW, must be one of the first games that ever did that). Set the voice to Japanese . My party is Hero (literally me), Serena (Priest(F)), Mythra (Warrior (F), Alm (Mage(M)). Gameplay wise the Famicom origins are obvious in world and dungeon design. It helps that you have a map for every area and dungeon because one of the main mechanics of Famicom RPGs is dead ends. There is also an optional objective marker if you can't find your way with the NPC hints. Game takes quite a few cues from DQXIs like Mini Medals and even the spell icons. The battle system is simple but fun, I just use Serena's WOOSH like I did in DQXIs to blast away most of the weaker enemies easily. Haven't seen any bosses or something like that yet.

Finished Metaphor and Warhammer.
Metaphor is very good but falls apart at the end and I'm not sure the job system works at all. 9/10, great JRPG but not an all time worldy. Space Marine 2 campaign was good fun, reminded me of Halo but ultimately a bit thin overall, 7.5/10 (but a good one)

Getting ready to start STALKER 2. Most of the reviews say the game has a beautiful open world, challenging gameplay, great exploration and is a buggy mess with a slew of technical issues. Essentially, it's STALKER with better graphics.

Wow, on the Series X this does not run well at all. I am playing on performance mode for graphics which is supposed to be 60fps but it feels more like 30fps with dips. Enjoying the game but the performance hurts.
Not a fan that you can't sell or scrap broken guns, though partially damaged can be sold. You see a little broken red heart on a weapon just leave it. Guns can be repaired but the price is way higher than what you can sell it for afterward, according to reviewers.

Fought the first boss. Was king for a bit. Got bored being king and continued the adventure. Spoiler: (click to show)

Enjoying Stalker 2. Feels like the old games, which is nice. Some funny dialog, too. Overheard a guy talking about his friend who got caught between 2 blood suckers, and the friend said "I guess I am the lucky Pierre". Got a good chuckle out of me.

How is Alan Wake 2? thinking about buying it for Black Friday.

Visually one of the best games of this gen, interesting characters, great story. Just an incredible presentation overall. Like a lot of Remedy games though it is a bit of a potemkin village, the running and gunning is good enough but all the hidden collectibles and stuff isn't really worth it. I think I would've had an even better time if I skipped all that and focused on the main story path. Doing all the "gamey" stuff and back tracking kind of breaks the immersion. Easily an 8/10 or so for me. I should get back to it sometime to check out the second ending they added post launch.

Managed to turn World of Warcraft Classic into a portable game on the ROG Ally. Playing a 20 year old version of the game on the go.
Time to kill some boars.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D on the Nintendo Switch™
Snuck into not-Cleopatra's bedroom, took all her treasures and she rewarded me with a ring even though the staff was very uncomfortable with my presence. "Now leave quickly Hero, what would the people think" Looted a chest in her basement and a sarcophagus opened. Spoiler: (click to show) Should've done all this before the Pyramid though, got a few total party wipeouts there until I went fully manual controlling all the moves. Not sure what else I'll play today, maybe I'll continue the invasion of Iraq.
I have only played one Kariosoft game, Game Dev Story and it was a time killer but ran poorly on the Series X. Noticed Forest Golf planner was on the PS5. I loved Sid Meiers SimGolf back in the day so I gave it a shot. Fun little game where you can build an 18 hole course and try to raise it to a 5 star course. Not as in depth as I recall SimGolf but you have to manage difficulty of the holes, the scenery which lets you make more money and the costs of maintaining each hole.
There is a simple mini game to train golfers, which is a must as advancing requires your members to beat rival golfers. Plus managing the clubhouse by adding new fixtures and dealing with quality of the product to get more sales or going for more inventory so you do not run out. Made it to a five-star course and got my money's worth.

Currently on with DQ3 Remake, beat the pyramid, surprisingly lovely to just turn my brain off and grind on auto while dooting about looking for items. Game looks fantastic, I'd take a whole bunch of these games, I love this style of JRPG.
In the drought I think I'm gonna go back to Death Stranding. I am in chapter 6 or 7 or something. Still got more than half of astrobot to do, tbh I don't really care that much it's fine enough but it's just a platformer

You are in luck they are also remastering DQI and DQII plus there have been many 'classic' (J)RPG remasters released this generation, like Trials of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean: Second Story R, Live A Live and many more.
I'm a bunch of story beats beyond the pyramid now and able to change the vocations of my party, which allows for some serious skill stacking. Yesterday I finished the first episode of DOOM 1+2 within an hour. It just doesn't age ever and the remixed soundtrack they added slaps.

Very LTTP but I just started Hotline Miami, which was dirt cheap on PSN's store. Like US$2.5 or something. It's got a banging soundtrack, but I feel stressed when playing it. The controls are simple, but different enough from what I'm accustomed to, I press the wrong buttons all the time.

Indiana Jones and the GREAT Circle.
Machine Games doesn't miss. Excellent game. Very different from the usual licensed game. As good as the Marvel Guardians game was, it was still a bit simplistic. This game though, almost an immersive sim. Biggest downside is probably the janky combat, when you get spotted by too many enemies it is best to just reload and try again. Graphics are fantastic, all ray tracing does is tank the framerate though and there is a bug with the frame gen which makes the game stutter. So best to just rely on native TAA and leave all the RTX shenanigans behind, which is probably how this modified ID Tech engine works and looks best anyway. This is easily one of the best games released this year and I've only scratched the surface of the vatican so far. It is a bit on the slower side though, lots of searching, exploring and just wandering around finding ways to tackle problems and unlock new areas. Fighting and shooting only a last resort in this part of the game. Might not hold your interest if you're not into the history/adventure stuff.

Back on Starfield again. I've got days playing this game and it's not the best, but it's super easy to play and you get stuff for playing and progressing. And I have barely touched the ship building and settlement stuff which I will eventually get to. I do hope Bethesda makes more DLC for it as I don't don't dig creation stuff since it's not official.
Still have the ps3 hooked up so I'm also rocking Gradius V (not as good as III, the goat) and Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, still the greatest wrestling game ever made. I like WWE 2k23(?), but it's missing something the firepro games have. I also have the most recent Fire Pro with the NJPW expansion, but my laptop died, and I never bothered replacing it, so ps3 version it is.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is fucking amazing. And exactly the game I needed.
I put it off because I could see Atlus going the like...anime high-school giggle girls meet-cute fan-shipping power rankings direction with tons of fully voiced dialogue and interminable cutscenes. I've had enough of that for a lifetime, and I assumed that SMTV would not escape this same fate. But it does! Seems like they just added enough anime booby ladies and high school waifus to bait the modern RPG audience, but this is still a real, honest-to-god SMT game. It's just such a game. I bought because I spent 15 hours on the damn demo in something like 4 days. Playing on Hard too, and it's been such a fun time.

Second go of Alan Wake 2. A lot of it is annoying and the gameplay is objectively bad but I'm enjoying it more and making decent progress.
The real flaw of this game for me is Sam Lake. The metatextual stuff isn't clever, it's stupid and weirdly narcissistic. I feel like I'm reading the first draft of his rambles whenever the Sam Lake/Alan Casey characters speak. I've adjusted expectations to a kind of Hellblade/The Quarry level of videogame and having a better time of it.

I was honestly amazed that I almost never see this called out about AW2. It's so unapologetic and in your face: Kojima games are study in humble understatement by comparison. I really wanted to like the game but ended up dropping it because of this + the awful gameplay. |
