one of the links on that "settled science" from 4 years ago:
https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2016/gender-lines-science-transgender-identity/
Quote:In 2016, a controversial bill was signed in Georgia, banning transgender individuals from using restrooms designated for the sex with which they identify. In the wake of this legislation, Between the (Gender) Lines: The Science of Transgender Identity explored what was known at the time about transgender identity, discussing scientific evidence for its biological bases, as well as the social and psychological ramifications of binary gender classifications. Regrettably, both the text and the figures in this article were being abused by those seeking to support their own beliefs. As such, we decided to remove this article in 2021 to prevent its further misappropriation by individuals and groups seeking to oversimplify this complex subject and promote views that lack a scientific basis.
why would they retract it?
if what you wrote was scientifically proven and true, why would it matter if it was being used to "support someone's own beliefs?" if there's an article that says brushing your teeth is beneficial and then I evilly use this to bully people into buying my expensive toothpaste, is that a reason to retract truthful, established science?

I enjoyed the article and followed up on a few of the references, but I was a bit let down by what I found. In the section on estrogen receptor sensitivity, you refer to two articles. The first links to a paper on genetic polymorphism in ERβ, rather than a direct measurement of sensitivity. The second article explicitly states, “molecular findings presented no evidence of an association between the sex hormone-related genes and MtF transsexualism,” which seems to contradict your claim that there is supporting evidence for the hypothesis. Do you have more concrete data on this?
another article that mentions it:
http://www.inquiriesjournal.com/articles/1963/the-role-and-weaponization-of-scientific-objectivity-in-gender-discourse-and-the-debate-over-transgender-rights
Quote:Alternatively, Wu (2016) presents a biologist’s perspective which suggests transgender identity itself is grounded in biology too. She suggests transgender women have brain structures that best resemble cis women, not cis men, and that inadequate levels of estrogen during fetal development can lead a person to be transgender female-to-male (Wu, 2016). Wu’s construction of gender is ‘grounded in science’ (as the Trump administration calls for), but also suggests that transgender identity is ‘grounded in science’. However, not only has this paper been criticized for its small sample size (Dutton & Maddison, 2020), it has since been retracted by its publishers because its content was “being abused by those seeking to support their own beliefs” and “misappropriation by individuals and groups seeking to oversimplify this complex subject and promote views that lack a scientific basis” (SITN, 2016). We can see that the field of biology is not in unanimous agreement, because Wu’s perspectives contradict the narrative that transgender identities are a social phenomenon. However, this also demonstrates that interpretation and application of ‘biology’ is being expropriated for ideological agendas, and that Wu’s ostensibly objective investigation has been extrapolated outside of its motive.

Uncle, you are going to love (hate) this article:
Quote:Even if the reports published by Ait Aoudia are authentic, however, the alleged findings have been misrepresented. If true, they would not conclusively prove that Khelif "is a man." Instead, as Snopes explains here, they would highlight the reality that, from a scientific standpoint, gender is not actually as binary as some suggest it to be.
https://www.snopes.com/news/2024/11/20/imane-khelif-medical-records/
Quote:The photographs and excerpts published by Ait Aoudia and alleged to be from Khelif's medical file are unverified. Even if accurately excerpted, however, the findings he describes have been distorted by editorializations that helped drive the story to virality.

"I'm sure of it!" "yeah, we can do this!"
everyone reiterates their entire character arc in every scene, "my father may be dead, but I can still make him proud by trying my best!" "my allegiance to my country doesn't come before what my heart tells me!"
god damn Either I'm going senile or games got worse with this over time.
It's like JRPGs--despite holding no other tradition sacred--have some ancient allegiance to that part of a 16-bit, barely-animated dialogue moment where each little 20-pixel-tall sprite says a unique version of "we can do this!" in a quickly dismissed textbox.
This worked (almost without notice) back then because graphics barely existed at the time, therefore you needed to leverage every trick in the book to build character and presence for an ensemble cast. This little go-team roll-call moments were one of those tricks, and it only took about 30 seconds of the player's time.
You can do all of that with a pose or a facial expression now! You really didn't need to recreate it with 100% accuracy + full voice acting + elaborate individual character animations that you can't skip unless you want to bypass the entire scene.
RPGs, particularly Japanese ones, are dogshit for telling Hollywood-style stories because of their non-linear nature and the (nominal) freedom offered by giving the player agency in deciding on the course of actions from characters.
It's always hilarious when the cutscenes are stressing to the player that the world is going to end and I'm busy wasting days and days farming and fishing so I can get a slight upgrade on some shit in my inventory.
This is especially prevalent in the "we're all in this together" scenes because the characters often are not in this together and some have been excluded from any of the action entirely because they've been sitting on an airship waiting to be involved in the party.

You can't even keep your memes clean of problematic elements. I'm so, so tired of having to share media with absolute idiots.
Medically - No. There are procedures, cautions, medications, etc. that depend completely on your biological sex. Or as the more inclusive way to say it, the sex you were assigned at birth. Women don't get prostate exams, for example.
Scientifically - Lol no. Women have XX chromosomes, natural uterus, no penis or balls. We all learned this in middle school.
Legally - Pretty sure that even in states with full legal recognition of transgender identity, most businesses and institutions within the state don't always recognize it. Which is why a trans woman can't just stroll into a girls locker room, massage parlor, etc. without getting proper clearance, which doesn't always get approved. And not without it potentially becoming a big news scandal.
Personally speaking, I use "cis women" from time to time because it's quicker than stuffing in "biological" when speaking about women who aren't trans. It used to just be women, but we all know how that is now.

In 2016, the main defining argument of the pro-trans crowd was that gender was different from sex, so biological appearance did not matter. The argument was recognition that, yes, transgender women were 100% male biologically, but felt like women on the inside. Now as you see, it's slowly being corrupted into "they're literally just women, zero difference, chud". Only point out being "Trans" if you can use it as oppression brownie points.
