I like the Indy game tbh. It's the best thing machine games have made since the ps4 wolfenstein. It feels more like Dishonoured than any of those though.

For me I think it's evidence that MS just doesn't have a clue. They struggle to put quality out the door. When they do pull it off, they're awful custodians of their own product. I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox heads see that Starfield and Indiana Jones are only 2 points apart on Metacritic PC, and just helplessly shrug.

We're in a strange place with xbox stuff because
- There aren't comparatively many Xboxs out there in the grand scheme of things
- Everyone who is likely to play the game is either on PC or playstation anyway
- If they aren't playing it on xbox the majority will be playing it right now on pc gamepass which won't show up in the steam count (and is a low number overall)
I agree that they are tragic and have been for a while though, the bore tends to focus on playstation/nintendo manchild behaviour but the delusional xbox fellas are the weirdest imo, I can understand slavish devotion to bloodborne or zelda

Kinda the thing though, this is the first thing they've done since Wolfenstein. Time doesn't exist anymore
The era meltdown thread should be fun

Yeah, it's pretty good so far.
Honestly I think Microsoft is a bit cursed right now. Doesn't matter what the quality of the game is, it'll just sell like sludge. Expecting Avowed to be the next meager launch. (Not that the dumbass activist dev didn't help with that)

Why would I buy the new Indy when I could just sub to gamepass to play it. This is a problem ms created for themselves.

(Not that the dumbass activist dev didn't help with that) I just think about Phil Spencer's clip from a I think a year back where he said that making good single player games won't change the situation for Xbox.
It just reeks of a lack of, I dunno...corporate imagination. Of course the calculus isn't just "make good games that review well and win the console wars". I gotta believe Sony and Nintendo both think really hard about better-than-good constantly, and consider tons of factors external to just the game quality: release timings, advertising windows, marketing positioning, in-house vs. external, do we marry this to an IP or not, etc etc.
Like, I don't know if Sony would've even gone for Indiana Jones...is that really the IP you want your best developers working on in 2024? Does the IP offer anything beyond added constraints?
I just feel like Xbox doesn't even ask get around to asking those questions. "Hey, we've got licensed IP games too!" is about the beginning and the end of their analysis and planning as far as I can tell.
Problem is they can’t make an explorer type IP from scratch because people would say they are just ripping off Uncharted, so why not go for the Indy IP, it’s dormant (the last couple of films don’t count lol)

I liked the three single player games. Don’t know the full lore and if it’s like Doom with everything connected. Among other reasons, people were upset over the co-op game with the daughters for skipped over Wolfenstein 3. Like, they skip over beating the Nazi and killing Hitler? Something like that.
I am absolutely thrilled that the jury did the right thing and acquitted Daniel Penny today!!!

Xbox is transitioning into unaliving itself.
They want to drop hardware but they don't quite have the streaming quality they need to do it.
They want to focus on GamePass full stop but they can't abandon the sales they get on Steam and other platforms.
They want to end the console war with PlayStation but they can't push out the games at the same time on all platforms yet.
To point out the insanity, they're now shipping 'physical games' which are essentially empty discs because everything installs from the cloud.
Even the name of the product doesn't make sense, so they came up with this "Everything is now an Xbox" nonsense which just hammers home the point that you don't really need an Xbox if you own an iPad or Samsung TV?
On the 'how the hell do we make this profitable' side things are even more dire. They basically have to put everything on GamePass (including Call of Duty and Indy) to give GamePass enough 'value' so existing subscribers don't cancel. However that means that GamePass becomes very lopsided for 'big releases' and first party IPs and is no longer interesting for third party developers that have to compete with the Xbox/Bethesda/Activision library.
The 'hours played' metric they use to measure succes also seems like a bad choice. After all, the more people play their games the higher the server costs will be while the subscription fee remains flat. And finally the what I call "Ghetto Gamers" which is Xbox main target audience now is mostly playing on GamePass + Series S because it's the cheapest option. They have no interest in spending on the DLCs and cosmetics that would otherwise make the F2P model work.

Which is unfortunate because 2025 and beyond look like they're going to be amazing for Xbox first party.
The problem is that this kind of output should've started in 2015, not now.
