I think this is a huge part of it. When people engage with media as a little kid, they may not UNDERSTAND the themes. They'll digest them and sometimes internalize them, but they won't know they're doing it yet because they aren't old or developed enough to actively exercise that part of their mind, and that leads to stuff becoming "time locked" in their brains to the way they remember experiencing it in the nostalgia center of their brains.

Using myself as an example, when I was very little, I was terrified of Star Wars. I could not watch the movies until I was probably 12 or 13, so I don't have that early-childhood association with Star Wars a lot of folks have. I eventually got around to watching the movies when the Special Editions came out, but I don't have that same deep, personal CONNECTION to Star Wars that a lot of folks my age have. It was just a movie I watched. I wound up more invested in the 90s novels than in the movies, weirdly.

Childhoodsmasher's idiocy aside, how can these types find trans allegory everywhere, but can't seem to digest the themes behind something as shallow as Helldivers and Fallout?

Yeah, I was hopeful that Vavra would either have been shown the door (best case scenario) or at least kept away from the press (more realistic scenario) before the second game came out, but instead they're going with the "we consulted with people of different ethnicities or religious beliefs so we're cool" strategy. (Not even an Ubisoft style "This game was developed by a diverse team..." message, because that's obviously not true.)

As a side topic, I finally got around to playing Tears of the Kingdom (good game, won't continue - Link makes me dysphoric), but the Ritos are like massively gendered and it feels really stupid and funny to have bright colours and the like birds being the girl ones and then you have all the male ones being dark colours or white and it's so silly.


It feels like I'm doing my thing looking at how kids' toys are gendered in a gender studies 101 course again.
I do like pretty much all of the other character desings though, all the women feel dressed at least believably for the world in which they inhabit and while the great fairy is sexual there's nothing wrong with that, though I do wonder if they're intended to be designed after drag queens or if I'm just reading into their vibes which almost feel like a parody of femininity and if that's intentional or if that's like a misogyny from me

The majority of issues people have are focused around what might at first seem like a progressive change: the removal of gender options. You can no longer choose between being male or female, instead having all head, body and hair options put together. Great, right? That's far more inclusive, and only the wahhiest crybaby would struggle to just pick the one that matches their own preference from the list. Oh, except in doing this, Niantic has replaced what was already there with a bunch of androgynous body-type options, a weird middle-ground compromise that offers far less variety. You can now be fat or thin, but that's about it.

For those who haven't heard, there's an unlicensed Joker movie currently playing in a limited number of movie theaters. This is a not a parody that makes obvious hints at DC characters but doesn't uses the trademarked names or designs either. Rather, it's a retelling of the Joker origin story that uses well-known characters from the Batman universe.

The story? The Joker decides to start his own comedy club where he meets and befriends the main antagonists from the Batman universe (Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Penguin, etc), realizes they're either transgender or a drag queen (the movie wasn't clear), starts a romantic relationship with Jason Todd who claims that Batman is a pedophilic rapist, and gets his giggles from a prescription drug that makes its users happy.

The movie is unfortunately terrible, relying on pot humor, myriad DC references, and jokes about their nonexistent budget instead of funny comedy, and the draw that I was watching something illicit soon gave way to boredom. But who cares about that? It's wild that this movie exists. How did DC let this happen? And will we see more movies that defy copywrite restrictions?
