I live in DC and cycling is my hobby so I take long bike rides nearly every morning for cardio. This morning when I was about half way into my ride I took a turn around some park pretty much in the middle of nowhere in Maryland, and came across a truly shocking scene. Only a few feet from me, a vehicle was stopped in the middle of the road and a man had a woman in a chokehold from behind trying to pull her into the vehicle while she was screaming like crazy. I was stopped with one foot still clipped into my bike just frozen trying to process what I was seeing.

At first I thought I was witnessing an abduction, but quickly realized it was domestic violence. The guy dragged her by the neck into the car violently while she was screaming, kicking and punching, and she kicked the door back open, and then he slammed it closed. I wasn't sure what to do, so I went around the corner and called the police. I had no idea where I was, but they were able to ping my phone as I described what was going on. About three minutes later I turned around, and went by and they were still there, and about 30 seconds later I came across the police who were driving the wrong way, I flagged them down and pointed them to where to go.

I have no idea what happened afterwards. I hope they locked that POS up, I still can't get over it. I know DV is not uncommon, but that was the most disturbing thing I've ever experienced in my life. Part of me feels like a coward, and I briefly thought of trying to get between them myself before I called the cops, but realistically I'm 41, the guy was prob. half my age, and I can barely walk in my cycling shoes, let alone fight. I'm embarrassed to say that I've been feeling 'off' and numb ever since, and I'm not the one that was being abused. I can't stop thinking about that poor woman's struggles and screaming. People suck.

As incensing as it is to see people banned for protesting events surrounding the removal of trans rights and healthcare due to the use of a specific word, it doesn't eclipse the hurt experienced by women who have been subjected to it in its more violent use both here and abroad. It's easy to let the frustration of the former land on top of the existing anger the initial protesting is about and react in short-sighted ways. I'm sorry for speaking to things in a way that left other women here feeling less seen or appreciated. I do think a degree of context could be used in determining a given punishment, and was never arguing for acceptance of a use beyond which we've seen contested bans for, but it's clear there's a deeper sentiment at hand than I'd appreciated.
