This, I will note, is why derailing threads with other issues can also be bad. It results in the same dynamic. Imagine a thread about how AI is aiding in new medical discoveries getting derailed by people mad about how it's being used to do art and put artists out of business (or vice versa). That thread will almost certainly go badly due to the derail since people would be talking past each other on issues that matter a lot to both sides. Everyone would get pissed off and accuse everyone else of being a jackass and everyone would be "right". It would just lead to toxic community dynamics. It's generally why we hit attempted derails the way we do. They never go anywhere good.

I really couldn't disagree more.... The thread OP and their framing was completely fine. It was informative and let people come to their own conclusions. It provided a setup for discussion and debate and didn't inject any inflammatory, dishonest bad faith nonsense. It's exactly what an OP should be!

And the thread itself was also mostly going fine. The majority of posters were expressing concerns, a few were dismissive and rude, but overall it wasn't particularly hostile (not by Era standards anyway lol) - nothing a regular mod-post/TRB couldn't handle. Mods in this thread even encouraged the thread creation, and a few participated in it. ,

I'm sorry but this thread lock makes absolutely no sense, and is once again stifling and burying important discussion. Please, please reconsider this lock.  This is a really bad look.

I spent literally hours putting together a neutral, factual description of the model and its capabilities because I think it's an important, shocking development that people need to know about beyond the one OT (and the mods agreed) -- too important for me to insert my own views. If the unwritten rule is that such threads are only allowed if they're framed explicitly negatively, it would be cool if you would say that up front, rather than offer a chance to share something we think is worth discussing and then blame us for not pre-emptively shaping people's reaction a specific way.

Tbh, I haven't even read the thread because I stayed up late to finish it and had to go to bed. Maybe it was full of vicious arguments and had to be closed, idk. But I really resent being blamed for how people responded when I endeavored to write a "just the facts" treatment of it specifically to avoid stoking a fighty dynamic.

Yes, they don't understand ownership or theft. (Hence, their constant confusion about capitalism.) You licensed it when you consented to post it on their servers. They own the data on their servers, you own the copyright to reproduce it. AI is not reproducing anything, they are very much struggling with the fact that AI does not reproduce existing content.

For something similar, piracy is not theft, it's copyright violation. The nuance is important.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church has traditionally established no formal policy on issues that affect LGBTQ+ people. But it has long been clear that the church condemns same-sex relationships. And in 2004, church leaders articulated that condemnation in a rare statement against marriage equality that same-sex relationships contradict their understanding of Scripture.

The AME Church does not appear to address transgender issues specifically but does closely follow scriptural teachings regarding God’s creation of man and woman with the implication that gender is biologically determined.

ON MARRIAGE EQUALITY
At the AME national convention in July 2004, delegates voted to forbid ministers from performing marriage or civil union ceremonies for same-sex couples. The vote was unanimous, and there was no debate on the topic. The decision marked the first vote on the issue of marriage rights for same-sex couples by a predominantly African-American denomination.

Earlier in the year, before marriage became legal for same-sex couples in Massachusetts, the Rev. Gregory G. Groover Sr., an AME pastor in Boston, explained why AME preachers opposed the move. He was quoted in the Boston Globe on Feb. 10, 2004, as saying: “As black preachers, we are progressive in our social consciousness, and in our political ideology as an oppressed people we will often be against the status quo, but our first call is to hear the voice of God in our Scriptures, and where an issue clearly contradicts our understanding of Scripture, we have to apply that understanding.”

ON NON-DISCRIMINATION
The AME Church does not appear to have taken an official stand on the Equality Act or other issues regarding non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

In August 2003, after an article in USA Today incorrectly stated that the African Methodist Episcopal Church ordained gay ministers, Bishop Richard Franklin Norris issued this statement refuting that position and instructed all AME pastors to read it to their congregations: “The official position of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is not in favor of the ordination of openly gay persons to the ranks of clergy in our church. This position reaffirms our published position papers, public statements and prior rulings, all of which indicate that we do not support the ordination of openly gay persons.”
