I just want to point out that the hate for androgyny isn't new, in the gaming circle I've seen it since the late 90s for both women and men, often with homophobia included and often the people complaining enforcing gender norms; and Era is 100% guilty of playing into it, I've criticised several times that in many of those "Ugliest characters/character designs in games" for the longest time include androgynous characters. Whether it was men being too feminine or women being too manly, I've seen time and time again characters get treated with disdain. The fighting game scene REALLY hated androgynous characters, from Capcom fans with Remy, KOF fans with Ash Crimson and for the longest time I remember the hatedom GuGe Bridget used to get.

Yeah it's just repackaged transphobia and homophobia and misogyny all wrapped up into an ugly little ball. IMO I think androgynous characters are cool and as nonbinary trans people, our gender can fluctuate between horse girl, Naoto from P4 (some where between girl-twink and boygirl), emo boy but in a girl way, and too puppy/kitty to care about gender, it's no surprise that this is the case.
Really wish society would catch up on this though and stop being icked out. Obviously the character in these games are like 15 and also the games are not good about gay or trans or women people but Persona has some really nice androgynous character designs, and Pokemon ScaVio had some really cool androgynous characters in Grush and Rika. Guilty Gear also has the canon Nonbinary Testament which is so cool. I really hope video games continue on this path and we don't get another half decade or full decade pandering to the gamer gators that live in the sewers of the internet.
