Biden's order, and the headlines it created, is meant to get the word out NOW and disuade people like that Chinese man, or the young Georgian woman who broke her leg trying to cross the mountains and is now in a wheelchair in a Tijuana shelter and with no money, from falling for the cartel's and trafficker's ploy. Targeted media campaigns and speeches aren't enough because it's a worldwide problem, not just in Central American countries where the U.S. puts up billboards to disuade people from coming to the border.

99% of all these migrants show up at the border with smartphones these days.

Most of them know perfectly well the traffickers are lying but they just want to move to the US and Europe based on what they see and read on the internet.
And they also see, hear and read that most countries will not deport them after they enter and an army of lawyers is ready to make their case. 

We need to abandon this idea that these people are all too dumb to understand they're being 'tricked' into moving.
The traffickers are simply offering a service for a demand that is already there. The 'advertising' helps but it's not the main reason why they choose to make the trip.

They know that currently at worst they get send back and at best they receive UN issued credit cards, shelter and a possible future in a nation with a GDP 50x - 100x their own.

This part is oddly infuriating to me because, at the local political level, my country's official position is probably as pro-Palestine as it gets. Lula has been calling it a genocide for months now, and the pushback he got for doing so seems ridiculous in hindsight. But being so, there's so little else we can do as political influence (except, like you said, spread awareness) that it's somehow a very bad feeling too.

It's pretty blatant with these actions that Biden admin doesn't care for migrants or are trying to help the immigration process. They will couch it in pragmatic terms so it appeals to a lot of people who don't know the ins and outs and paints the US gov't as a victim of "flooding" when all those systemic issues of resource scarcity is self-inflicted rather than the blame lying on too many immigrants wanting to come. And systemic issues require systemic solutions, across the board.

Nepenthe's argument is that corrupt cartelized agricultural slavery is the most efficient economic system in history, just insane profits with no costs. And yet it was abandoned by the whites for inferior capitalism because... allowing people to own their own labor is... more white supremacist? Or something? Reading her more generally, I don't think Nepenthe thinks slavery in America was morally wrong other than it was race-based and therefore done to Black people. Another day, another animated show who's fate is being determined by streaming views. Similar to Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, the fate of the show is currently tied to if US audiences watch on US Disney+. If not, the show will be cancelled without a conclusion.

Man I hate this. There are so many shows I intend to watch, to pick away at as I find the time, including this and Moon Girl. I hate that there's so much pressure on viewers now to support these shows asap in order to determine their fate and people's livelihood. There's a glut of media coming out all the time at this point, all putting the onus on us to keep it alive, to the point that I just get a sort of mental paralysis when deciding what to prioritize and when.

I'll probably leave it running on a screen somewhere in the house to help out at drop, and actually watch it when I'm ready.
