I know nobody here actually cares, and they’re all just using it as an excuse to be mean to others, but I have a really shitty skin condition that will cause my skin to crack and bleed if it gets too dry. I have been explicitly advised by my dermatologist to not shower every day. It feels very cool to be told by dozens of people how this makes me disgusting.

Just coming in to say:

Not every act of shame is a reference back to some oppressive -ism. Refusing to wash everday is not an act of class consciousness, and subsequently being shamed and made fun of for deliberately skipping bathing when you have no medical or systemic reason not to is not an example of classism. Poorer and more oppressed people than you, historically and today, are able to wash every day. You don't wash every day because you don't want to.

This is a forum primarily visited by American and European white folk who likely have systemic access to clean water, the same class of folk that, ironically, put it onto minorities that they were the ones unclean and filthy for a whole host of oppressive reasons outside of their control, hence the cultural disparities and reactions to bathing habits you're seeing before you now. Y'all have been allowed to get away with proudly proclaiming you don't wash, you hate wearing shoes, you don't wash your bedsheets, and all other manner of tomfoolery and nuttery, just because you have been able to do it without stigma. Well, with the power of the Internet, now you're in the company of a lot of Black and Brown folk who have been forced to be more clean as a survival mechanism, and now they're gonna clown on you for comparatively-slovenly ways.

My wife has worked with those experiencing homeless for about 10 years now. From a shelter to an agency that helps house individuals. In all of the noise and issues of this world homelessness is one of the most forgotten and overlooked. People in this situation are looked down upon as undeserving of basic human rights.

That’s why I want to make this PSA. I have spent a lot of time with people in this situation through my wife’s profession. They are no different from you or I and the language we use further separates them from the rest of society. Homeless, unfortunately, is part of our society.

Not every homeless person looks like the stereotype we see on tv. The amount of times I have seen someone shocked that a person is homeless because “they don’t look like it” is mind boggling. There is no universal homeless “look”. When you go to the store in you’re PJs you don’t look homeless. When you leave your house in a hurry without a shower you don’t look homeless. It’s not accurate and I encourage anyone to remove this language from their vocabulary.

Just wanted to share something I see that bothers me. I’ve seen it here and I really think it’s unacceptable. Thanks for reading!

"points" means nothing to us.
A warning will be on your record permanently and if someone does something similar again we we take that into account and escalate as appropriate.

Does the record of warnings and bans ever expire?

e.g. say someone gets a short ban for X in year 1, then a longer ban for X again in year 5, then it happens again in year 20, maybe they get perma-banned then for a history of X?

The history doesn't expire but we absolutely take time-since into account. Let's say someone is Banned for something for a week two years ago, and they do the same thing again today, if it's nothing egregious, and the member has been generally well behaved since, we might just do a one week ban again, as opposed to escalating to two weeks.
If you were warned for something benign years ago, that is not going to make us jump to a perm today based solely on that.

So much that I was surprised to see clean homeless with well groomed dogs while in vacation in France years ago. 

I know that homeless can also be people living in a car or manchildren kicked out from their houses.

Frankly, we shouldn’t treat the housed as the “default.” The onus of categorization should be on housed people. We housed must also acknowledge the indigenous peoples’s lands we’re occupying. We should be doing this often. Daily. Possibly before meals.

Disney is slowing down when it comes to making movies and TV series for its Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm franchises, CEO Bob Iger said Thursday on CNBC.

The move comes as the company is looking to cut costs during a time when its recent films, from Marvel to animation, have underwhelmed at the box office.
