It's been really validating to hear someone talk about this game the way it felt to me - as just the tightest, most purely enjoyable thing I'd felt in a long time. Agree that the discourse here has been a dumpster fire, but wanted you to know you were a real bright spot in helping me feel hyped about Concord, one of the best multiplayer games I've ever played.

It'll be interesting if we'll see consequences from this four years down the line. I don't think any of those movies or games failed solely because they're woke or whatever, (like look at Valves deadlock, lots of inclusivity and doing gangbusters) but it seems like when you put inclusivity/diversity front and center about your product it puts it's on its back foot, something it has to overcome with other good qualities. The modern audience who will buy your game in droves because that one character is gay black and trans doesn't seem to exist. 
Meanwhile the "chud" audience who will buy your game solely because of sexy characters etc. isn't gigantic either but seemingly still a lot more tangible

We've arrived at a point where average Korean Gacha slop is better designed than western AAAA+ releases.
The mission design in The First Descendant is better than what I've seen in some recent titles.

Although you have to play the same mission 400 fucking times to get Hailey

I played the shit out of the first descendant when it dropped, I farmed every descendant, maxed out ultimate bunny ultimate gley and ultimate lepic plus several weapons.  I even got to do Kyle smash for the 12 hours the bug was publicly known about before it was patched.  I read the patch notes for season 1 and said fuck that to hailey.  Game is fun but other than maxing out Enzo and yujin support builds I have nothing left to do.

Might actually need to take an extended break from the site and social media for a bit for my mental health, the amount of toxic shit I keep seeing and reading is just rough. It's not even specific to this game at this point necessarily, I just think this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me.

I can't take reading "woke" anymore. I can't fucking handle people wishing for rank and file artists to lose their jobs because a video game character has purple hair. I can't handle seeing people whine about pronouns. I am literally becoming a worse person every time I have to read shit like that because my mind goes to dark, angry places that are just unhealthy to exist in for too long.

We'll see what happens but just in case I do decide to step away for a bit, it's been nice to see a subset of this community fight back against this kind of shit and try to make sure it's never normalized or excused. Some people on this website have seemingly made peace with the state of discourse being like this but I can't. I never will. I just can't tolerate the shit anymore. Major kudos to everyone here who's fighting the good fights out there.

These all followed the same trajectory. Sony, not happy with how fast sequels could be pumped out by the original developers had other teams develop B-tier sequels until the well had run dry. The strength of Nintendo is not follow up a highly succesful 3D Mario game, with a quick 'cheap' sequel from another developer for the next holiday season.

You're skipping out on the thing that put PlayStation HQ at Defcon 1.

It's an "Exclusive" Sony first party title, at a fairly low price in a somewhat popular genre with 70 - 80 reviews from the Soyny Pony outlets, featured in their State of Play Showcases.
It should easily clear 250k - 500k units based on being a Sony published title at $40.

These sales are below the type of numbers that made Nintendo question the future of IPs like Fire Emblem and Metroid during the GameCube/GBA/DS era. 
And it didn't just bomb in one market, it bombed everywhere.

I know what you are saying.

What I am saying is that video games are THE most pre-eminent cultural artifacts of our times.

And that as a reflection of the culture, everything surrounding this game portends bad things beyond just the success and failure of a singular product.

That the broader inclinations of culture and its movement has been visible within the realm of games for quite a while. This game is a flashpoint in the current cultural war being waged.

Art is undeniably subjective, I have mentioned this many times. But this is beyond subjectivity. There's a lot more under the surface here.

Basically, this game is driving the schism between "are video games art? Or are they playthings?". Clearly, the latter is the broad reception.

And also, to put it another way, this is just another indication of the general anti-intellectual movement and the overall death of expertise.
When I say that, it is just short hand.

It's a video game lots of people poured their heart and work into, a game they want to use to say things, and to make voices heard.
