If you abandon an item in a public place for hours, you are no longer the physical owner of that item. You can say it's still wrong for someone to take the item but I do not feel that I am incorrect for viewing them as different levels of severity. Like there's a difference between eating food someone left behind on their plate when they left a restaurant and walking up to the person while they are still in the restaurant and eating their food. You can say both are bad things to do but acting like there is literally no difference between them is what I find unreasonable.

And for what it's worth, this entire argument is irrelevant because BOTH situations do not justify doxxing when you have no idea who else you could be putting at risk. But it's especially bad when the person didn't actually directly steal from you because you left the fucking watch behind yourself and admit you do this all the time.

How am I making up facts? He says in the post where he doxxes whoever took it that he left it on the plane because he constantly forgets to take all his stuff with him and thus leaves things behind all the time. He wasn't around when it was taken, he left it there and someone took it afterwards.

But if your perspective on the topic is one lacking subjectivity, there really is zero benefit to having the conversation at all. You're only interested in being factually correct about a definition. I'm not interested in literally any of that whatsoever, so your attempts to "educate" me are a waste of your time.

I think there is a clear difference between someone finding an item that has been left behind on a plane who knows how long ago and taking it and basically every other "well what if it was like this" example people have thrown at me. Earlier in this thread people were saying that even if you found a $20 on the ground in the middle of an empty park, it's stealing if you pick it up and take it. I think that's ridiculous, that is not stealing. If you then throw a law book and a dictionary in front of me and say "no it is stealing, according to these", then I will say that I disagree with those interpretations of stealing.

Because, this is the important part, I'm not talking about theft as a law or theft as an English word in a dictionary. I'm talking about theft as a concept. And I do not think things are quite so black and white there, there's room for nuance. And in that nuance, I do not think the reaction in this situation is justified by the crime.
