When it comes to the quality of discourse Era is fucking awful when it comes to actually discerning what looks "cheap." The Acolyte did not by any means look cheap. It had not just a ton of real sets that had to be built but also a metric fuckton of VFX elements per shot. If you look at BTS material there are entire scenes where the only real thing in the shot is the actors because everything else got replaced by VFX. But the average viewer or even experienced VFX artists would not be able to discern which shots are like that. Which is to say nothing of just how many aliens were in the show. Or even how they used a more expensive method for lightsaber fights in order to allow the actors to genuinely fight with lightsabers.

I feel like we're going backwards. I mean, I grew up with Samus Aran, Terra of FFVI, Lara Croft, Jill Valentine/Claire Redfield, and many others. It was fine. It was refreshing to me as a young gamer because there were so many male protagonist.

But now there seems to be a fragile Chud brigade online that goes apeshit when a female protagonist is revealed. Most recently with Ghost of Yotei. It's 2024 and this is a thing? I came across a clip of that idiot Asmondgold talking about "playing as a girl" online. It's hard to tell if he's trolling/sarcastic or real, but his fans believe it and they Imitate his nonsense. I mean, a grown man talking like this? It's not even a funny or original gag/joke.

I'm fully aware of GamerGate and the recent Sweet Baby outrage, but it's still crazy how regressed some of the gaming community is.

Exception is Final Fantasy where it established a different cast each time and it was the sixth in the series. My understanding has always been the people of chud took issue with replacing a man with a lady. I’m not so deep in the weeds about all this. Were they that upset about Horizon in 2017? Or Control? Or even the blockbuster game Forspoken? They always are loudest when it’s a sequel losing the male lead. Last of Us 2, Star Wars sequels, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Alan Wake 2, et al.

The level of outrage is also just hard to quantify. Personally I don't see that many people mad about Ghost of Yotai, just people looking at the voice actress and worried that gender queer etc. will worm it's way into the game, but even that is a relatively small group of people.

Similarly no one was really mad about Ellie taking the spotlight in Last of Us 2, the anger was about what Abby did to Joel and how the game then tries to redeem her.

Danny Trejo is 5’6” and shrinking. Always thought he was tall and meant to be intimidating. In the 2002 classic, xXx, Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage breaks the illusion by calling him short. THIS GAME CAME OUT YESTERDAY. One person? One? It's a colorful and polished party game with a nice trailer from a seasoned indie dev? The Pixeljunk games were an indie staple of the 360/PS3 gen. Q Games also had a Steam release last year with a max concurrent of FIVE players.

This is actually crazy. I thought just how ignored Wild Bastards was seemed scary. Or a dozen other cool looking indies I've seen this year with sub 100 reviews on Steam.

There is no talking around this. No excuses. The game has had official trailers on Xbox and Playstation and has been at multiple showcases now. It was on the Xbox TGS showcase yesterday. That was streamed out to 350k people. ONE PLAYER? And it wasn't sizzle. It was shown off.

How could an indie dev even stomach making a game in 2024? This is actually horrifying.
